Extending Care Nationwide
After nearly 14 years as the leading pediatric bariatric surgeon at Children’s National in Washington, D.C., I recognized that to enhance care for children nationwide, it was essential that I try help others establish treatment programs across the country. I also needed to bring my message directly to the people suffering from obesity.
A Career Dedicated to Children's Health
My commitment is improving the lives of children and adolescents with obesity through both surgical and non-surgical innovative treatments. Ensuring that my patients and their families feel safe and heard is paramount. Understanding the apprehension surrounding surgery and other treatments, I strive to make everyone comfortable with both me and the treatment plan.

Addressing the Obesity Epidemic
In the United States, the latest data show that approximately 20% of the pediatric population and about 40% of adults are affected by obesity. This epidemic imposes an estimated $175 billion annual burden on the healthcare system. To alter these numbers, it's critical to align societal perceptions of obesity with the scientific understanding.
Dispelling Myths About Obesity
Obesity isn’t a lifestyle choice—it’s a disease with complex causes that affects millions of people. The impact on health and well-being is immense, and the financial burden on the healthcare system some have estimated to be as large as $1 TRILLION! But what concerns me most is the misinformation that still surrounds obesity.
For too long, obesity has been misunderstood. The truth is, obesity is a metabolic disease that results from multiple factors—genetics, epigenetics, the environment, and more. It is not a failure of will power, bad parenting, or a personal decision. The only way to shift the narrative and improve outcomes is to align public perception with the science.
My Mission: Helping 100 Million People
My goal is to help over 100 million people battling obesity by ensuring they receive the care, support, and understanding they deserve. Through my work with ProCare Consultants, I help healthcare providers across the country develop comprehensive, multidisciplinary pediatric obesity treatment programs. By expanding access to evidence-based care, I hope to change not only individual lives but also the way our society treats and understands obesity.
I do this work because I believe every child deserves the chance to live a healthy, full life—without stigma, without shame, and with the best possible care.
